Set sail to a free weekend.

How much do you think it would cost to go to a Red Sox game, a dance club, sailing on the Harbor, and a view of Boston from 221 feet up? Probably a lot of money, right? Well, this weekend I did all of these things and did not spend a dime.

How is this possible you ask? It's called free events in Boston.

Let's start with the Red Sox game. This one isn't usually free, but I wanted to highlight how you can get cheap tickets. I went to the game for free because one of my friends got free tickets from his family friend. While this is a rare occurrence, you can get cheap game tickets if you buy them off stubhub.com a few hours before the game. If you live in Boston, this is great, because you can buy the tickets two hours before the game and not have to worry about traffic. The closer it gets to the game time, the cheaper tickets get. You can usually get a good deal between $14-$25. Then once you're there, you can always walk around and look for open seats that are closer. But shh, I didn't tell you that. :)

It's Friday night, you're done with work for the week, and ready to go out. Instead of hitting up the bar or club, why not go to a giant outdoor dance party? Well, this weekend in Cambridge, I did just that. The annual Cambridge Dance Party was from 7-11pm this past Friday night. They closed off a section of the street and turned the lawn and street area into a dance party. When my friend and I arrived there at 7, it was mostly little kids and dancing mothers that you knew were making their children cringe. The music was from 50+ years ago and we felt slightly out of place as the only 20-somethings there. We decided to take a walk to Harvard Square and go back later when more friends were meeting us. Two hours later with a group of friends in tow, we went back to the dance party. And boy were we in for a surprise. It looked like a rave had erupted in the street. The closed off area was packed with young people dancing, and the songs were all current. We joined the crowd and danced until it ended at 11. It was fun and interesting, and one of my friends even picked up a few numbers! Safe to say, the night was a success.

Now on to sailing. The feeling of the sun on your skin, breeze in your hair, and the smell of saltwater, all while looking at a great view of the Boston skyline is hard to put a price on. But in this case, the price was free. The Boston Sailing Club had a free sailing day this Saturday where you could go out on the water with a skipper for a half hour free of charge between 1 and 4 pm. They usually have a few different free days during the early spring and summer, so if you watch out on places like Boston.com and follow @BostonTweet, you're sure to find out when their free days are.

After sailing, we decided to venture over to the Bunker Hill Monument. We were with a friend from Germany, so we walked along the Freedom Trail to get there to show her around. I feel that people who live in Boston forget how great the Freedom Trail is. If you've got a free Saturday, check it out! Anyways, we went to the Bunker Hill Monument, climbed 294 steps (quite the workout) and then were treated to a spectacular 360 view of Boston from the top. While it is a little strenuous, you get just as good of a view as paying to go to the top of the Prudential Center.

Sunday I had to work, but there was one more AMAZING free thing that happened in Boston.  The AMP Radio Music Bash was a free concert featuring Drop City Yacht Club, Timeflies, Sammy Adams, Selena Gomez, Arianna Grande & Jason Derulo! I was upset I couldn't go because I had to work, although I did get to see Train, Gavin DeGraw, and Andy Grammer for free in the fall at the Esplanade. Just goes to show that when you live in Boston, you can see big names for FREE!

This was an initial post to show how many free things there are to do in Boston that are also a TON of fun! From now on, I will try to post things in advanced and then follow up on them so everyone can do these free and fun things too.

Soon to come will be a post about affordable and enjoyable things that I enjoy that are always going on in Boston. Until then, champagnes kisses.
